Manhattan Project
In 1939, President Roosevelt agreed to investigate the creation of the atomic bomb (McCurry 5) . Einstien wrote Roosevelt about creating the atomic bomb in August 1939 (Grant 46). When he agreed, this investigation was called The Manhattan Project. This project had an unlimited budget (Grant 18). July 16th, 1945 was when The Manhattan Project tested their first successful atomic bomb at Trinity Test Site at Alamogordo, New Mexico (Bombing 2).
During World War Two
On December 7th, 1941, Pearl Harbor was bombed by Japan, that same day the United States of America declared war on Japan. Initially Japan was not the only target, since the bombs were developed during World War II before the surrender of Germany. But in May, 1945 Germany was defeated so Japan was the only target left (Grant 20). A suicide attack from the Japanese damaged the United States Ship Missouri on April 11th, 1945 (Grant 15). During April and June, 1945, the Battle for Okinawa killed 13,000 and injured wounded 36,000 American troops (On 2). On July 25th, 1945, Truman authorized for the bombs to be dropped (Grant 6).
